’13 matches since Shaw hit his fifty’: Ponting launches no-holds-barred attack
delhi capitals Have endured a poor season so far, as they are at the bottom of the table with only two wins from seven matches. His batting has been a major concern this year and it hasn’t helped the team that one of their most explosive batsmen – Prithvi Shaw Going through a tough time. In six matches, Shaw has scored only 47 runs and was dropped from the XI during DC’s last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier this week.
And while his replacement in the role – Phil Salt – couldn’t really step up on this occasion against Sunrisers, comments from head coach Ricky Ponting suggest Shaw could be forced to the sidelines for a longer period. The former Australian skipper didn’t mince his words criticizing Shaw’s poor performance in the 2023 season so far.
“I think it is 13 games (also keeping IPL 2022 in mind) since Prithvi has scored 50 with the bat for Delhi Capitals. There are a lot of other players with other teams who are playing a whole lot better. Compared to Earth,” Ponting told the media ahead of the side’s reverse fixture against SRH.
Ponting said, “Earth at his best… We know he’s a match-winner. It’s one of the reasons he’s a retained player because we know if he bats a certain amount of time, we About 95% of the matches are won.” “But so far this season, he hasn’t been able to produce,” he added.
Ponting said in a matter-of-fact manner that the side doesn’t need Shaw in the XI right now, as he referred to his stats this season.
He said, ‘I think in the six matches he played, he had more than 40 runs, so we don’t need him right now. So is it a tough decision to drop him but hopefully the team we put out on the park tomorrow can win another game for us,” said the head coach.
