Anthony Edwards’ lawyer makes statement about assault allegations against Wolves star
The Minnesota Timberwolves lost 109-112 to the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 on Tuesday. Anthony Edwards scored the most points for the Wolves as he finished with 29 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
As the Wolves were defeated, Edwards ran down the tunnel to enter the locker room. According to a video that went viral on social media, Edwards pulled out a chair while leaving the court and threw it at two Denver Arena employees who were injured.
According to a report in ESPN, Edwards’ attorney Harvey Steinberg issued a statement through the Timberwolves on Thursday. Steinberg has criticized the Denver Police Department for charging Edwards with third-degree assault for a post-Game 5 incident in which it is alleged he swung a folding chair and injured two employees.
“With the game over, Anthony’s exit from the court was partially obstructed by a chair, which he carried and came down three steps later. As video of the incident confirms, Anthony did not But didn’t turn the chair and certainly didn’t intend to do so. To hurt anyone,” Steinberg said.
“Despite these innocent facts, the Denver Police Department unnecessarily chose to charge Anthony with two counts of misdemeanor assault. Anthony intends to vigorously defend against these baseless allegations,” he said.
Meanwhile, Edwards is due in court on June 9. Police charged Edwards with two counts of third-degree assault. Each charge is a Category 1 felony with a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
On the incident, the Wolves’ statement read: “We are aware of the alleged incident regarding Anthony Edwards following Game 5 in Denver and are in the process of gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time.”
