Gujarat Giants coach Ram Mehar Singh lauds Little Giants initiative
With an aim to make a significant contribution to indigenous sports like Kabaddi, Ram Mehar Singh, coach of Adani Gujarat Giants in the Pro Kabaddi League, firmly believes that Adani Gujarat Giants’ Little Giants program can be a gamechanger.
He also feels that such events are necessary to raise the profile of sports in the state and are a good tool to connect with grassroots talent.
Talking about the importance of taking such initiatives, Ram Mehar Singh says, “It is time we make Kabaddi a big sport in Gujarat and programs like Little Giants, which started last year, help spread this narrative. Can help us reach the audience. And for the Little Giants to compete with the big names like Maharashtra Kabaddi Club and Haryana Academies, we must create more awareness. Another important aspect of this program is that the state is expected to produce more professional kabaddi players. This is a great initiative by Adani Gujarat Giants.
The Little Giants program is currently running in four major cities, namely Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda and Rajkot. Soon, the team will conduct player trials across the state which will help them generate buzz about the game and also generate interest among people. The process of becoming a good sportsperson starts at an early age, especially when children are in school and hence the team feels that encouraging school children will enable the initiative to raise the profile of the sport.
The second season of Little Giants program is about to start soon. In the inaugural edition, over 3,000 children from over 224 schools in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot participated. The number is expected to increase in the upcoming editions.
When asked what are the measures that should be taken to ensure that these children do well, Singh suggests, “We have to ensure that the children selected for higher training in the program are well taken care of. Yes, maintain a healthy diet and balance your studies and practice sessions. They should be provided with kits and other necessary infrastructure.”
He further adds, “The coach also needs to be in sync with each child to help them perform well. The Adani Sportsline team has done a fantastic job in bringing a world class setup for these kids. Nurturing children through this program can help us come to the national level, making everyone and our country proud.
