On Saturday night, young batsmen like Sarfaraz Khan, Priyam Garg and Ripple Patel failed to keep up the momentum as Capitals chased down 198 against Sunrisers Hyderabad after Marsh and Phil Salt scored 112 in 11 overs.
Marsh tried to defend the management’s decision to send Garg and Sarfaraz ahead of the in-form Akshar Patel.
“We have a lot of faith in all our players. We have some inexperienced players in our lineup, but you gotta believe me, you’ve got to throw those guys in there and I don’t think the game was over there tonight,” Marsh said after the match.
However, TOI understands that the Capitals management is not happy with how the scouting has gone in the last two years which has led to poor preparation for the auction.
“There are people who have little experience of high quality Cricket And he has been tasked with scouting talent. A source told TOI that the absence of head coaches at the auction table is also irking the management.
Six years ago, this franchise decided to invest in youngsters like Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw and Akshar Patel. As these youngsters gained experience, leading roles were given to senior professionals such as Shikhar Dhawan.
Unlike many in the past, this current bunch of youngsters have not set domestic white-ball cricket on fire. Yash Dhull was not tested when he was selected purely on the basis of what he had done with the India Under-19 team. Sarfraz has been brilliant in red-ball cricket but he has not dominated in the white-ball format either. Ripple is primed for three seasons in the Capitals, but has yet to find his rhythm. The lack of development of Lalit Yadav has also disappointed the management. Nevertheless, he was preferred over R Ashwin’s experience.

“It is true that the mega auction disrupted the core of the team. But buying back most of the star players should have done the trick somehow. Scouting is majorly based on analysis only on computers,” said the source.
With 10 teams playing in the IPL, the talent pool to rebuild the capital has dried up. It can be assumed that the management is considering opening the transfer window to do some heavy business ahead of next season.
As of now, DC are languishing at the bottom of the table with virtually no chance of making the playoffs.
