World Boxing Championship: Ashish reaches next round, Harsh lost 0-5
Tokyo Olympian Ashish Chowdhary advanced to the 80kg pre-quarterfinals with a split decision win over Iran’s Mesam Gheshlaghi at the men’s World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
Ashish won 4-1 in a hard-fought match against the former Asian Championships silver medalist. The 28-year-old from Himachal Pradesh displayed his aggressive intent from the outset, landing powerful jabs to keep his opponent at bay in the first round.
Ashish, the 2019 Asian Championships silver medallist, used his smart movement and supreme technical ability to outmaneuver Irani. He will now face a tough challenge in the round of 16 from two-time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez of Cuba.
Meanwhile, debutant Harsh Chowdhary crashed out of the competition in the 86kg category after going down 0-5 by unanimous decision against Australia’s Billy McAllister.
On Wednesday, Nishant Dev (71kg) will take on 2021 World Championships bronze medalist Sarkhan Aliyev of Azerbaijan in his first match of the tournament, which is featuring 538 boxers including multiple Olympic medalists from 107 nations.
