World Boxing: Hassamuddin wins in first round, Varinder loses
Commonwealth Games medalist Mohammad Hasamuddin began his campaign at the Boxing World Championships in Tashkent on Monday with a comfortable win over Alen Rustamovski of Macedonia.
Hassamuddin won the round of 64 bout with a 5-0 unanimous decision in the 57kg. The left-hander dominated from the outset, throwing some powerful punches. Rustamovsky tried to keep himself busy in the second round, but Hassamuddin was getting the better of the exchanges, landing his punches with precision. The Indian kept up the offensive momentum and landed a flurry of punches in the third round.
However, it was the end of Varinder Singh’s journey in the 60kg category. He lost to Uzbekistan’s Tursunov Mujibilo, who was aggressive and defended well with an effective close guard. Varinder didn’t find openings to attack, while Tursunov was quick to score through his combination punches to win the bout 5-0.
