‘You can’t do that, have seen it with Prithvi Shaw…’: Gavaskar lashes out at Rayudu | Cricket
MS Dhoni is not the only Chennai Super Kings Cricketers who might be playing their IPL this year. Ambati Rayudu has also reached the fag end of his career but unlike Dhoni, he is not in the best of form with the bat. The former India cricketer has managed to score 83 runs in eight matches IPL 2023 At an average of 16.60 – the lowest in his 14-year-long career in the cash-rich league.
In this edition of IPL, he has been mostly used as a batsman or impact player by CSK. Thursday was no different against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. Rayudu was brought in as an impact player in place of left-arm fast bowler Akash Singh. But the right-handed batsman failed to make an impact.
Coming in to bat at No.4 in CSK’s chase of 203, Rayudu got out second ball while trying to play a big shot against RR off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. He went for a big slog sweep but could not find the desired timing and was out at deep mid-wicket. There was no power in the shot. And legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that one of the major reasons behind this was that Rayudu had not played any part in the match till then. He didn’t field and was drafted as an impact player, which means he probably wasn’t warming up properly.
Gavaskar also cited the example of Delhi Capitals batsman Prithvi Shaw to reinforce his point. “You come to field. You can’t just come to bat and start hitting the ball. You can’t do that. We have seen this with Prithvi Shaw. He is coming in to bat without success. Someone Not fielding.” No scoring. Rayudu got out for a second ball duck,” Gavaskar said on commentary on Rayudu’s dismissal.
Deciding to bat, RR posted a competitive 202 for five, riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 43-ball 77. Jaiswal and Jos Buttler (27 off 21) shared an 86-run partnership in 8.2 overs as RR got off to a great start.
Youngster Dhruv Jurel scored 34 off 15 balls while Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 23 off 13 balls to take RR past the 200-run mark. Tushar Deshpande took two wickets for 42 runs in four overs for CSK. Chasing, CSK never quite looked the part as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and managed 170 for six.
Shivam Dube (52 off 33) and opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (47 off 29) and top score for CSK. Adam Zampa took three wickets for 22 runs for RR.
